Every family has a album or a box of photographs, filled with moments from the past. As of being the proof that life milestones have happened. Shared and cherished in the present and then carried on for the future. In this month’s S&W journal, Áslaug & Siggi share thoughts about how having a photographer allows them to capture family’s milestones. How did you decide to have Sunday & White to capture your life throughout the milestones?
A dear friend of mine, Guðbjörg, recommended Laimonas when I was looking for a photographer for my wedding. They had worked together and she told me about his warm presence and how detail oriented he is. My husband and I were extremely happy with Laimonas' work on our wedding day, and we instantly felt a great connection with him. Since then, Laimonas has become very dear to us, capturing important moments like our daughter's newborn photos, her Christening, and precious family moments at our home.
How do you think a photographer can enhance the way you remember important moments in your family's life?
Thinking of the photographs from our wedding day, I can truly relive the moments through the images. Laimonas arrived at my family's house early on our wedding day. My little sister, who is like my second half, had prepared breakfast for my parents and me using my favourite china tea set, with my husband's favourite playlist in the background. Having Laimonas around felt so natural. The photos take me back to getting ready, meeting my soon-to-be husband in the garden, walking out of the church newly married surrounded by loved ones, sitting with my family at the wedding party listening to heartfelt speeches, my husband's cousins performing a song for us, our first dance, and the surprise when all the wedding guests suddenly started dancing a dance they had learned before the wedding to mention some moments! All the love, laughter, and joy can really be relived through the photographs Laimonas so dedicatedly captured for us on this special day.
Having said that, I also clearly remember an indescribable feeling sitting in the church, just married and holding hands with my husband, feeling so grateful, closing my eyes, and realizing that this feeling can't be fully described or captured.
Have you ever regretted not having professional photographs taken during a particular milestone or event in your family's life?
I love photography and capturing special moments, and my family sometimes teases me for wanting to hire a photographer for every special occasion! However, I can't think of a special moment I regret not having a professional photographer. I have tried to gather them together for a formal professional family photo but haven't succeeded. My mother prefers candid shots, which I understand.
Laimonas is however excellent at capturing shots like that, natural and relaxed, and my family is very happy with the pictures he has taken for us.
Do you share the photographs once when ready with your family & friends or is it foremost for private reasons?
Personally I create photo books and prints for personal use. I don't share much on social media, but it's however very nice to be able to share special moments with close family and friends. I have however shared some moments and a lot of people have asked me who this talented photographer is. Laimonas uploads the photos to a beautiful gallery that is easy to share. My parents treasure the photo books I made with pictures of their old house, our wedding day, and our daughter’s Christening, all taken by Laimonas.
Can you share a specific moment or event in your family's life that was special because it was captured by a photographer?
Our wedding day comes first to mind. As said we really treasure the moments dear Laimonas captured and as described one can really see the feelings though the photos, the love and joy. My husband and I got ready in different locations and I really cherish the beautiful photos he took of my husband while he was getting ready. He also enjoyed looking through the photos of me getting ready with my family. When I had the wedding dress on I felt overwhelmed and so happy being surrounded by my family and thinking about the big moment ahead. My husband and I decided to meet before the ceremony in my family's garden. It was a beautiful moment, and we felt really relaxed having Laimonas around.
Why would you recommend a family photographer to others?
It’s so precious to have special moments captured on camera. Moments should not be staged for the camera; the camera should capture natural moments, and this is something Laimonas excels at. He has a great eye for detail, a wonderful style, and a genuinely kind presence. I really treasure all the pictures he has taken for us and can relive those moments through his photos <3
